Kentucky's only underground boat tour offers a new,
exciting glimpse of areas in the cave seldom seen since its discovery.
This unique cave has flowing through it the shortest, deepest river
in the world as claimed by Ripley's Believe It Or Not, and has the
largest cave opening east of the Mississippi River. The human history
of the cave and valley dates back over 10,000 years, and the cave
has provided shelter at one time or another for Native Americans,
both Union and Confederate soldiers during the course of the Civil
War and the notorious outlaw Jesse James and his gang after they
had robbed the Southern Deposit Bank in nearby Russellville. It
has served in various capacities since its discovery. In the early
1800s Lost River Cave was the site of a unique water-powered mill,
located in the mouth of the cave. The cave was also the site of
a night club which attracted people and bands from all over the
country from the 1930s to the early 1960s. Located a short walk
from the visitors center is the Lost River Butterfly Habitat, a
tranquil resting-place for people and butterflies, full of flowers
and host plants. As you enter the Butterfly Habitat, you feel a
slight fluttering as a gorgeous butterfly alights on your shoulder
and gently brushes your cheek.

Perched on a small promontory just over a mile west
of Bowling Green's town square, historic Riverview has stood majestically
for more than 130 years. The history of the home includes the saga
of a prominent and prosperous south central Kentucky family who
graced her halls for nearly 90 years and includes significant Civil
War history. The story of Riverview as a historic site began in
the mid-1960s as a grass roots effort to save the Italianate-style
structure so the future generations could know and appreciate the
lifestyle of the region in the latter half of the 19th century.
Considered one of the finest examples of its type of architecture
in the Commonwealth, Riverview's allure continues inside the house
where staff and volunteers strive to recreate an appropriate, authentic
interior. Throughout the museum, visitors are seduced by a never
ending collection of 19th century artifacts that give Riverview
an exceptionally lived in appearance.

St. Joseph Catholic Church is located in the heart
of the Bowling Green Historic District. The church was placed on
the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 because of its
artistic and historic significance. The Parish was founded in 1859
to serve the needs of Irish Catholic immigrants brought to Bowling
Green with the construction of the railroad. The Golthic style church
was constructed in three stages over a thirty year period, being
dedicated finally in 1889. The first pastor, Reverend Joseph DeVries,
who oversaw the entire construction, is said to have been inspired
in the church's design by the Cathedral Church of Cologne, Germany.
Father DeVries died three months after the church's dedication and,
in deference to his wishes, is interred in a vault under the old
high altar. The Gothic interior has been redecorated and judiciously
adapted several times since 1889 to meet the needs of a thriving
Catholic community.

While Kentuckians divided between the North and
South, the state adopted a unique policy of neutrality at the start
of the Civil War. That ended in September 1861 when Confederate
troops seized the Mississippi River town of Columbus, Kentucky and
Northern troops responded by pouring into Paducah and Smithland.
Fully realizing its importance to the Southern cause, Confederate
General Simon Bolivar Buckner quickly moved a detachment of troops
to occupy Bowling Green on September 1861. Eighteen sites remain
including forts, a cave, homes, a monument, markers and a museum.

As the downtown areas of many cities become rundown
and neglected, Historic Downtown Bowling Green has seen a resurgence
in downtown life. The legal and financial nexus of Bowling Green
and a busting retail center with a variety of goods and services,
downtown is again alive with activity. Beautiful Fountain Square
Park, renovated in 1999, serves as the heart of this energetic area.
The park has been the focus of downtown Bowling Green since 1798
when Robert Moore donated the original two acre tract to the county
for public use. By 1812, when the state legislature incorporated
the town, a two story brick building replaced the original log courthouse.
In addition to the courthouse, the public square was the location
of the town's jail and market house. The present park was built
between 1871 and 1872 according to plans of John Cox Underwood.
The original stone fountain was replaced in 1881 with a cast iron
fountain from the J.L. Mott Company of New York City. The statues
of the Four Seasons and the urns found in the park were cast by
New York City's J.W. Fiske Company. Several commemorative structures
have been added since, but the concept of a landscaped public park
has retained much of the same appearance as when designed by Underwood
in 1871. There are guided walking tours available upon request and
free concerts in the park in June and July.
Hours: Open year-round, weather
permitting. Tour time is approximately one hour. Group rates are
$2 per person, $20 minimum; student groups are free. Guided and
self-guided tours are available as well as reservations. Coach parking
and accessibility are also available. Unique shops surround the
park.
