GIRLS’ TURN AS CULVER’S LADY GATOR HOLIDAY CLASSIC RETURNS DEC. 26-29
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With the basketball season heating up, the road to the Houchens KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16 is coming into view. Fans in Bowling Green will get a Sweet 16 preview again this year as the Greenwood Lady Gators host the Culver’s Lady Gator Holiday Classic December 26-29 at Greenwood High School.
The tournament will feature some of the top players and highly ranked girls’ teams in Kentucky, plus Warren Co. High from McMinnville, Tenn. The twelve teams competing are Greenwood, Franklin-Simpson, Muhlenberg Co., Ohio Co., Clay Co., Green Co., Marion Co., Hart Co., Calloway Co., Bullitt East, Warren Co. (TN), and the 2009 State Champion team Iroquois.
“Bowling Green is a great city to host an event such as this, with plenty of restaurants, shopping, and recreation available. We have been able to fill the slots fairly easily and expect to continue building this event each year,” Greenwood Athletic Director Todd Tolbert said.
This year’s lineup is impressive with Louisville Iroquois returning to defend their title, plus top regional contenders in Calloway Co., Muhlenberg Co., Ohio Co., Franklin-Simpson, Green Co., Bullitt East, Hart Co., and Clay Co. In addition, Marion Co. is not only a regional contender, but also one of the favorites to bring home a state championship this year. Along with Iroquois, three teams (Franklin-Simpson, Ohio Co., and Clay Co.) were participants in last year’s state tournament. Three more, Calloway Co., Marion Co., and former Muhlenberg North were regional runners-up last year.
A wealth of talented and top ranked players laces the teams’ rosters again in 2009. Upperclassmen included in that group are Calloway County’s junior Averee Fields, Ohio County’s junior Arielle Keown, Muhleberg’s senior Hannah Reynolds, Franklin-Simpson’s junior Chastity Gooch, and Bullitt East’s senior Kayla Thacker. Notable sophomores include Greenwood’s Molly Lamb, Hart County’s Lindsey Burd, and Green County’s Micah Jones. Marion County’s trio of freshmen Makayla Epps and Kyvin Goodin-Rogers alongside sophmore Breanna Elder are sure to catch a few eyes.
A regular pool-play tournament, each squad will compete in four games. Saturday and Sunday’s games determine a seed and then cross-pool play begins on Monday. Tuesday’s games match the winners and losers of each of Monday’s games.
“We at Culver’s are so happy to be the Title Sponsor for the Lady Gator Holiday Classic for the 2nd year,” said Culver’s owner Don Durflinger. “The competition that Coach Ken Waddell, and Athletic Director Todd Tolbert bring to this tourney is amazing, and I can’t think of a better partnership for our local restaurant. Don’t miss any of the action this year. This is the best mid-season ladies basketball you will see, period.”
Tickets will cost $5 per day, or $3 for students. A ticket for the entire tournament will cost $15 for adults, or $10 for students.
