Pop the Hood on Heritage

What drives our passion and charges our pride?  At these spots, delve deeper into our history and heritage as you check out our planes, trains and automobiles at Aviation Heritage Park, the Historic Railpark & Train Museum and Beech Bend Raceway.  A behind-the-scenes tour of the GM Corvette Assembly Plant, a visit to the Kentucky Museum and a drive along the Civil War Discovery Trail to Riverview at Hobson Grove round out this day and a half adventure.

Begin your exploration of our history with a visit to Aviation Heritage Park, an outdoor plaza dedicated to distinguished aviators from the area.  Two planes are currently on display, a n F-4D Phantom and an F9F-5 Panther, and a radio broadcast tells the stories of their flights and the pilots who took them.

Next, go all aboard at the Historic Railpark & Train Museum for an entertaining history of life on the tracks.  The two-story museum located inside the former L&N Passenger Depot is chock full of memorabilia and six vintage railcars await your tour on the tracks out back.

Then it’s on to the Kentucky Museum to learn the story of the man behind the famous cake mix, Duncan Hines, a Bowling Green native.  Be sure to spend time in the Decorative Arts Gallery, the Civil War Exhibit, Warren County Then and Now Exhibit and the Robert Penn Warren collection.

Burn rubber out to Beech Bend Raceway for some nostalgic drag racing and see the track that’s been hosting hot rodders since 1949.  You can hear engines revving all weekend long between March and November and many national automotive events call Beech Bend home.

To see our workforce in action, start your next day off with a tour of the GM Corvette Assembly Plant if your visit falls on a weekday.  Many area residents have worked at the Plant since it moved to Bowling Green in 1981 and this is the only place in the world Corvettes are made.

Wrap up the history lesson with a drive along the Civil War Discovery Trail.  This tour takes you past remnants of forts, a cemetery, the former capitol building, Lost River Cave & Valley, Riverview at Hobson Grove and more.  Learn even more about our citizens’ involvement in the War Between the States by downloading or purchasing the accompanying audio tour.
